Witches namesNow lets get straight into this, and grasp the nettle, what name do you know your witch by? Many purists say that as the hedge witch is the local wise person. They are known by, well what they are referred to by others, so something like, old woman Smith, or Tom, or Mrs. Bloggs, or whatever, however many of these wise people would not themselves answer to the title witch. So I would say, and its a personal view from your editor here, that you can call yourself what you like, and I follow the tradition of having a witches name, so that any sniveling little fundamentalist weirdo, cant work out who I am. This Birds not getting roasted on any bonfire. Many of us do the same, selecting two names from plants, trees, or nature in some form. The reason why we have two names is that it getts confusing when a whole load of Willows get together, unless you can tell them apart. Me, my fellow witches know as, Rose-apple, and luckily I have always used the hyphen, so its real easy to use on the web. Selecting your own nameSo lets assume you think this is a cute idea and now want your own witches name, how do you go about getting one. Avoid descriptive terms that will change, such as little or young, and place names if you are potentially going to move, also avoid names of major paths like the elements, Wicca, and try to think of two things that you will find easy to remember. You wont come across as a very wise, wise person if you cant even recall what your name is. Never, never use a single word representing an element or feature of the craft, as you may be considered to be pretending to be some leader of some group, and you don't want to fall out with people before you get going do you. So how do you know if anyone else is called the same as you have chosen, well if you join the Traditional Craft Association, or register your witches name with Witchesmail, so you can get your emails forwarded under your witches name, they will tell you if the name you are proposing is the same as another witch.
Subscript - Nov 2005 The witchesmail registry was closed for a while, but is now back working again. They were worried about security but have overcome these concerns. Shortly they will be adding a form to allow easier name registration and even looking at issuing a certificate. It will still be completely free. |
